Question:
My car’s toe specification is in degrees. I am at the track and need to check the toe in inches. How do I convert degrees of toe into inches of toe?
Answer:
Look it up on our Degrees to Inches table or follow these instructions:
To look up, you need to know the outside tire diameter and the degrees of toe.
Outside tire diameter = D”
Toe specifications in degrees = to
* Assume toe IN is positive (+)
Toe specifications in inches = x”
Solve for toe in inches (x”)
x” / D” = sin(to)
x” = D” x sin(to)
Example:
Outside tire diameter = 24”
Toe specifications in degrees = 0.15o
Solve for toe in inches:
x” / 24” = sin(0.15o)
x” = 24” x sin(0.15o)
x” = 24” x 0.002618
x” = 0.062832 = about 1/16th inch
Notes: Remember this is for one side. Total toe is the sum of both sides.
If you are using a calculator make sure it is set for “degrees” and not “radians”.
Modern alignment equipment uses degrees because is eliminates the need to know the tire
diameter.
